Climatological Freshwater Flux 1988-2005

freshwater flux

Introduction

The knowledge of turbulent fluxes between ocean and atmosphere is of major importance for the understanding of the climate system. Satellites supply reliable data for the derivation of global time series of such fluxes. The freshwater flux and the related energy fluxes at the air-sea interface are, however, among the most challenging parameters to be derived from satellite measurements. Based on carefully selected and checked algorithms applied to satellite data, HOAPS provides a state of the art global climatology of sea surface evaporation and precipitation as well as related sea surface and atmospheric state parameters.

HOAPS-3

The current version - HOAPS-3 - is available via the CERA database-system:
CERA: HOAPS-G monthly,
CERA: HOAPS-G pentad and
CERA: HOAPS-C twice daily

HOAPS-3 contains a completely reprocessed time-series, now ranging from 07/1987 to 12/2005. Key features of the update are a new precipitation algorithm, the NOAA/NASA Pathfinder V5 SST dataset, a new procedure to synthezise failed 85Ghz channels on DMSP F08, and a new twice daily gridded data-product, HOAPS-C (composite).
For detailed information, see the Documentation section.

Terms of Data Use

The gridded version of the HOAPS database — HOAPS-G — is freely available for scientific use. We would appreciate to receive a short notice if you use HOAPS for your research objectives. If HOAPS is used in publications, please inform us about the expected publication details. Reprints of the publication are always welcome to our contact addresses.

For the citation of HOAPS-3 datasets, please refer to the entries in CERA database-system:
CERA: HOAPS-G monthly,
CERA: HOAPS-G pentad and
CERA: HOAPS-C twice daily

We hope that you will find the HOAPS database useful and we kindly encourage any kind of suggestions from the research community on possible improvements of the HOAPS dataset.

HOAPS-II

The previous version - HOAPS-II - is still accessible:
CERA: HOAPS-G monthly and
CERA: HOAPS-G pentad
